The running and walking app that feels like a game.
Waybound turns every run or walk into a fun run. Your real miles move you up a painted map you share with friends, and every 2 miles an egg hatches one of 200 creatures to keep.
iPhone only. Free to download, no ads, and nothing sells better odds.
Who it is for
Anyone who would go out more if going out were more fun.
New to running
You want a reason to get out the door. Pace does not matter, only distance, and your first egg hatches before your first run.
Walkers
Walks count exactly like runs: the same distance moves you the same way and earns the same XP. You never have to run.
Runners who are bored
Your miles already add up. Here they add up to a place on a map, a Journal of creatures and a race with friends, on top of the splits and heart rate you already track.
Friends and families
Invite people you know and race the same painted path each month, wherever each of you lives. Waybound is for ages 13 and up.
What makes a run or walk fun, and how Waybound does it
Four things turn exercise into a game. Waybound builds each one into a real run or walk, outdoors, on any route.
01
A goal every 2 miles
A long run is easier as a string of short ones.
Each month’s painted path has a stop every 2 miles. While you move, the screen and your Lock Screen show how far it is to the next discovery, so there is always a next thing to reach.
02
A surprise at every stop
Not knowing what is next is half the fun.
Every stop hatches an egg with one creature inside, and a stop is never empty. You tap to open it, and rarer creatures take more taps. About 1 in 640 finds is a Mythic, and nobody can buy better odds.
03
Something to collect
Collections give every outing a point.
200 creatures in seven types, each an enamel pin in your Journal with the run it came from. Creatures you have not found yet are favored, and every one has a rare Fabled strike.
04
Friends to race
A little friendly rivalry gets you out on the days you would skip.
Friends you invite are on the same painted path, so you can see who is ahead. On the 1st of each month everyone starts the new path at mile 0; your Journal, level and lifetime miles never reset.
And small daily goals. Two daily goals pay bonus XP, and one of them is always a single run or walk of a mile, so every day has a goal one ordinary fun walk finishes.
A real tracker underneath
The game sits on top of a full GPS run and walk tracker, so you do not need a second app.
GPS distance, pace, splits and elevation
Heart rate and zones from a Bluetooth monitor
Best effort medals from 1K to the marathon
Live distance and pace on the Lock Screen
Apple Watch, WHOOP and Oura runs through Apple Health
Strava history import
What Waybound is not
Worth knowing before you download.
Not an AR game
There is no camera view, and it does not send you to particular places. Any route counts, and only the distance you cover matters.
iPhone only
It needs iOS 16.4 or later. There is no Android version.
Outdoors, by GPS
Treadmill sessions do not count, and stretches at vehicle speeds are left out.
No audio story
Nothing talks in your ears. The reward is visual: a creature at every stop and a place on a shared map.
No global leaderboard
You race people you invite, not strangers.
Straight answers
What is the most fun running app?
It depends on what you find fun. If you like a story in your ears, Zombies, Run! does that. If you like training plans and a social feed, Strava and Nike Run Club do that. If you like collecting things and racing friends, Waybound turns every run or walk into a game: a stop every 2 miles, an egg that hatches one of 200 creatures, and a shared monthly map. It is free to download and has no ads.
Is there a walking game app like Pokémon GO?
Waybound is one for walkers who want to collect creatures while getting exercise, with one big difference from Pokémon GO: it is not an AR game and it does not send you to particular places. Any route counts, and only the distance you cover matters. Every 2 miles you walk, an egg hatches one of 200 creatures into your Journal.
Is there a running game where walks count too?
Yes. In Waybound walks count the same as runs: the same distance moves you the same way up the monthly map and earns the same XP. Distance is measured by GPS outdoors, so treadmill sessions do not count.
Is Waybound free?
Waybound is free to download and has no ads. The App Store listing shows any optional subscription and its price. Nothing in Waybound sells better odds or luck.
