01The basics
Is there a running app that feels like a game?
Yes. Waybound is a running game for iPhone. Your real runs and walks move you up a painted map each month, and every 2 miles an egg hatches one of 200 collectible creatures. Underneath the game it is a full GPS run tracker, with pace, splits, heart rate and best efforts.
How does Waybound work?
Record a run or walk with your iPhone's GPS. Every mile moves you up this month's painted path, the same path your friends are on. There is a stop every 2 miles, and each stop hatches an egg with one creature inside, which goes into your Journal with the run it came from. On the 1st of each month everyone starts the new path at mile 0; your Journal, level and lifetime miles never reset. See how it works.
Do I have to run, or do walks count?
Walks count. The same distance moves you the same way and earns the same XP whether you ran it or walked it. Distance is measured by GPS outdoors, so treadmill runs do not count, and stretches at vehicle speeds are left out.
What is a fun app for walking?
Waybound is a walking game as much as a running game. Every walk moves you up a painted map shared with your friends, and every 2 miles an egg hatches one of 200 collectible creatures. Walks count exactly like runs, with the same distance and the same XP, so you never have to run.
Is Waybound good for beginners?
Yes. Pace does not matter, only distance, so a slow walk counts the same as a fast run. Your first egg hatches before your first run, and one of the two daily goals is always a single run or walk of a mile, so every day has a goal one ordinary outing finishes.
Can I use Waybound just for walking?
Yes. You can start a walk instead of a run, and everything in the game works the same: the monthly path, the eggs every 2 miles, the Journal, XP and racing friends. Waybound also records your walks with GPS distance, pace and heart rate.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. Your iPhone is enough. Waybound can also connect to a Bluetooth heart-rate monitor, and runs from Apple Watch, WHOOP or Oura can count through Apple Health.
Does it work on Android?
No. Waybound is for iPhone only, and there is no Android version. It needs iOS 16.4 or later.
02Creatures and odds
What creatures are there?
200 creatures in seven types: Ground (35), Water (35), Air (35), Fire (35), Electric (35), Dragon (19), Mythic (6). Each one is an enamel pin in your Journal. See all 200 creatures.
What are the odds of a Mythic?
At base odds, about 1 in 640 finds is a Mythic. The other rarities: Common about 2 in 3, Uncommon about 1 in 4, Rare about 1 in 19, Epic about 1 in 75 and Legendary about 1 in 235. The further up the month's path you are, the better the odds, and about 1 in 64 finds is Fabled, a rare pearl strike of that creature.
What is a Fabled creature?
A rare strike of a creature you can find, in a pearl finish. About 1 in 64 finds is Fabled, on top of the creature's own rarity, so a Fabled Mythic is the rarest find in the game.
Can I buy better odds?
No. Waybound never sells randomized rewards, better odds, rerolls or luck. Distance is the only thing that moves you forward.
03Devices and imports
Does it work with Apple Watch, WHOOP or Oura?
Yes, through Apple Health. Turn on Apple Health in Waybound's settings and the running and walking workouts that Apple Watch, WHOOP, Oura or other apps save to Health this month count toward the race. Workouts without a GPS route do not move you along the map, and a workout that overlaps a run you recorded in Waybound counts once.
Can I import my Strava history?
Yes. Connect Strava in Waybound's settings to bring in your past runs and walks as history. Imported Strava activities stay in your own history: they do not move you along the race, earn XP or hatch creatures, and friends never see them.
Which heart-rate monitors work?
Bluetooth heart-rate monitors that use the standard heart-rate profile, which covers most chest straps and many armbands. A monitor is optional.
04Friends, price and privacy
How do friends work?
Send a friend your invite link. Once they accept, you see each other on this month's path and can open each other's Journal. There is no search and no global leaderboard: only people you invite.
Is Waybound free?
Waybound is free to download and has no ads. The App Store listing shows any optional subscription and its price. Nothing in Waybound sells better odds or luck.
Is my location data private?
Waybound uses your location while you record a run or walk, and while the Record tab is open on screen. It has no ads, does not sell your data and does not track you across other apps. Routes, locations and health data are never sent to analytics. Read the Privacy Policy.
